Yoga During Pregnancy — Why Is It Helpful?

Pregnancy is a wondrous time of change, with new life developing within a woman's body. From the beginning, the body begins to change, and as pregnancy progresses there can be fatigue, changes in posture, breathing challenges, heartburn, and back discomfort.

Yoga can be an ideal form of movement during pregnancy. It encourages relaxation, flexibility, and strength in a gentle way, without overexertion. Women learn to lengthen the spine, support good posture, and create more space for the growing belly.

Even during pregnancy it is possible and important to work gently with the deep abdominal muscles and pelvic floor — our internal support. The practice develops awareness of these muscles and how to use them appropriately during pregnancy and in preparation for birth.

Yoga also gives a woman an opportunity to connect inwardly with the baby in her womb. Many women value the chance to place their hands on the belly, feel the baby, and create a conscious connection.

Breathing is an important foundation of yoga. Learning to breathe with awareness, to relax, and to move with the breath can be valuable preparation for birth.

Movement during birth can help a woman remain active and connected to her body. A partner can also participate, learning ways of offering touch, massage, encouragement, and support.

Yoga can be appropriate even for women who have never practiced yoga before, including later in pregnancy, with the practice adapted to the individual woman and her stage of pregnancy.
